Finalists
LOLA Landscape Architects and MANDAWORKS were selected among three finalists in the international competition for Hamburg Science City Bahrenfeld, one of the most ambitious urban development projects currently underway in Germany.
The proposal connects scientific research, housing and landscape into a unified masterplan, bringing Volkspark deeper into the district and linking surrounding neighbourhoods through a sequence of public spaces.
At its core is an accelerator axis that ties Science City, Bahrenfeld and the garden city of Holstenkamp into a district where global ambition and local character meet.
Working Across Two Scales
A project like this lives at two scales simultaneously and both have to work. We produced masterplan visualizations that communicate the overall structure and logic of the proposal, and street-level imagery that shows what it actually feels like to be inside it.
Moving between the two is a different kind of challenge than working at one scale alone. The masterplan has to read clearly from above; the street view has to feel specific enough that a person can imagine being there.
Getting both right in the same set requires a consistent visual language that holds across the distance.
The Result
A finalist position in a competition of this scale is a meaningful outcome.
The visualizations supported the team in communicating a proposal that is at once large in ambition and precise in its detail, which is exactly what the brief required.
